What is Fire Protective Glass?
Fire protective glass is a type of fire rated glass capable of containing flames and smoke, preventing it from transferring to other areas. It meets NFPA 257 / UL 9 / CAN/ULC S106 for use in fire rated windows or openings and NFPA 252 / UL 10B/10C / CAN/ULC S104 for use in fire rated door assemblies. All of our fire protective glass options meet ANSI Z97.1 Class A and CPSC Cat. II impact safety requirements. Listed and labeled by UL and/or Intertek and proudly USA-made.
Fire protective glass is typically fire rated from up to 45 minutes and limited to 25% of the wall area. They can also be used in 60-180 minute temperature rise doors up to 100 square inches. Depending on the fire separation distance, they can also be used in 45 and 90 minute exterior fire rated windows or openings.
The codes limit the use of fire protective glass because it cannot block radiant heat. To exceed the size limitations or use glazing where fire protective glazing is not allowed, designers can specify fire resistive glass instead.

Helps Contain Fire & Smoke
Our clear, fire protective glazing products contains flames and smoke to one area to slow the spread of fire. This allows building occupants to gain valuable time to escape, as well as minimize the damage to property by containing the fire to its origin. Unlike wired glass, our products are capable of staying in the opening for its prescribed fire endurance period without the need for wires, which actually weaken the glass.
Meet CPSC Cat. II Impact Safety Requirements
Our fire protective glazing products meet the ANSI Z97.1 Class A and CPSC Cat. II impact safety standard (the maximum federal impact standard for safety glazing) without the use of films or laminates. Compared to filmed wired glass, filmed ceramic or laminated ceramic, our fire protective glass products are more likely to survive the impact, thus reducing replacement costs over time.
Many Custom Options Available
Our fire protective glass products can be customized to include custom options such as security, energy performance, decorative and more. Our SuperClear® 45-HS and SuperClear® 45-HS-LI are approved glazing components in the NFRC CMAST database.
Fire Protective Glass Applications
Our fire protective glass can be used in the following applications: 45 minute interior fire rated windows or openings up to 25% of the wall area; 20-45 minute fire rated doors; 45 minute fire rated sidelites and transoms; 45 and 90 minute exterior fire rated windows or openings depending on the fire separation distance; 60-180 minute fire rated door vision lites up to 100 square inches.

SAFTI FIRST®’s new SuperClear® 45-HS and SuperClear® 45-HS-LI are approved for glazing in all 45 minute doors, sidelites, transoms and openings in large sizes. Meets strict fire, hose stream and safety requirements without wires, tints, films or laminates. Made in the USA for fast lead times—at costs significantly less than ceramics or safety wired—with better VLT, STC and OITC performance values. UL listed and labeled. Patented.
Traditional Wired Glass is Not Safe
Traditional wired glass is made with steel wire mesh that acts as a reinforcement. During a fire test, the grid holds the glass in place. Although believed to make the glass stronger, the sharp wires actually pose more harm than good and can cause serious injuries to people who come in contact with the installation. Before the development of wire-free, safety rated fire-rated glass, schools used traditional wired glass because of its capacity to contain fires while still allowing people to look through doors and windows.
