Fire resistive glass

Contains flames, smoke and blocks radiant heat.

Tested to ASTM E119 / UL 263 and CAN/ULC S101.

What is Fire resistive Glass?

Fire resistive glass is a type of fire rated glass capable of containing flames, smoke and block the passage of dangerous radiant heat.  It meets ASTM E119 / UL 263 / CAN/ULC S101 used in fire rated walls, storefronts, curtain walls, full-vision temperature rise doors and floors.  All of our fire resistive glass options meet ANSI Z97.1 Class A and CPSC Cat. II impact safety requirements.  Listed and labeled by UL and/or Intertek up to 2 hours with hose stream and proudly USA-made.

Fire resistive glass is typically used in applications 60 minutes and above.  Unlike fire protective glass, fire resistive glass does not have application or size limitations mandated by code because it has the ability to block radiant heat.  It can be used up to the maximum size tested in floor-to-ceiling or wall-to-wall applications, providing designers with maximum vision and transparency while meeting code requirements.

Our fire resistive glass products can be further enhanced to protect against hurricanes, bullets, blast, forced entry, attack, UV, noise and more.  Decorative and energy efficient make-ups are also available.  Our fire resistive products have the largest clear view areas for maximum transparency and available low-iron make-ups for superior optical clarity.

Contains Flames, Smoke and blocks radiant heat

Using advanced fire rated glazing technology, our clear, fire resistive glass products protect people and property by containing flames, smoke and blocking the transfer of dangerous radiant heat.  The ability to limit this heat transfer is what makes our fire resistive glass products ideal for 1-2 hour stairwells, occupancy separations and property or lot line situations.

Meets CPSC Cat. II Impact Safety Requirements

Our fire resistive glass products meet the ANSI Z97.1 Class A and CPSC Cat. II impact safety standard (the maximum federal impact standard for safety glazing).  By incorporating tempered glass in our fire resistive tempered units, they become more durable and less susceptible to cracking during installation and during normal use compared to annealed multilaminates, thus reducing replacement costs overtime.

Many Custom Options Available

Our fire resistive glass products can be customized to also protect against bullets, blast, hurricane, forced entry, attack, UV, noise and more.  Decorative and energy efficient make-ups are also available.  Our SuperLite® II-XL and SuperLite® II-XLB products are approved glazing components in the NFRC CMAST database.

Fire resistive Glass Applications

Our fire resistive glass can be used in the following applications:  full vision 60-90 minute temperature rise fire rated doors;  1-2 hour fire resistive walls, storefronts, butt-glazed walls and curtain walls.  Can be used in interior and exterior applications.

PODCAST: Increasing Clear Views in Fire Rated Glazing

When it comes to fire rated glazing, size matters. In this podcast, Tim Nass talks about how SAFTI FIRST® answers the design community’s demand for larger clear views and increased transparency in fire rated glass walls and full-vision door applications.

TIMTALK: Orlando VA Medical Center

The Orlando VA Medical Center needed glazing that would not only provide light and transparency, but fire and hurricane protection and improved energy performance. SuperLite® II-XL in GPX® Hurricane Framing from SAFTI FIRST® was installed in exterior fire-rated locations that were exposed to the elements. These assemblies were rigorously tested and certified for fire and radiant heat protection for up to two hours, large missile impact, air and water infiltration, and cyclic wind loading.

TIMTALK: 520 West 20th Street

The architects at Morris Adjmi wanted large, 11-ft. tall glass walls to highlight the breathtaking views for the reimagined Warehouse in New York City’s growing architectural wonderland of Chelsea. However, the building was on a lot line, mandating 2 hour fire walls. SAFTI FIRST® made this dream a reality by supplying the largest tested and listed 2 hour fire resistive glazing available today. The inclusion of low-iron glass in the fire-resistive glazing units ensured superior clarity and aesthetic continuity with the adjacent non-rated windows. The fire resistive units incorporated high performance glazing and were filled with argon for energy efficiency and occupant comfort.
