FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SAFTI FIRST® PUBLISHES ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATION FOR SUPERLITE® II-XL FIRE RESISTIVE GLASS
Brisbane, CA (July 21, 2026) – SAFTI FIRST®, the only USA-manufacturer of advanced fire rated glass and framing systems, is pleased to announce the publication of an independently verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its SuperLite® II-XL fire resistive glass product family.
Published through Smart EPD®, the declaration was developed in accordance with ISO 14025 and ISO 21930:2017.
Advancing Transparency for Fire Rated Glass
The new EPD provides architects, specifiers, sustainability consultants, contractors and building owners with independently verified information about the environmental impacts associated with SuperLite® II-XL.
The cradle-to-gate assessment covers:
- A1: Raw material supply
- A2: Transportation of raw materials
- A3: Manufacturing at SAFTI FIRST®’s facility in Merced, California
The declaration reports environmental impact categories including Global Warming Potential (GWP), Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), Acidification Potential (AP), Eutrophication Potential (EP) and Photochemical Ozone Creation Potential (POCP).
“Publishing an EPD for SuperLite® II-XL is an important step in our continued commitment to product transparency and sustainable manufacturing,” says Bill O’Keeffe, President and Owner of SAFTI FIRST®. “It gives design and building professionals reliable environmental data while reinforcing that fire and life safety, architectural design and sustainability can work together.”
Facility-Specific Data from USA Manufacturing
The EPD was developed using actual 2024 production data from SAFTI FIRST®’s Merced, California manufacturing facility, with 82.5% of the assessment supported by supply-chain-specific data. The assessment includes information covering raw material inputs, transportation, energy, water, packaging and manufacturing waste.
Primary information provided by SAFTI FIRST® was reviewed for precision and completeness, while the life cycle assessment and EPD underwent independent external review and verification.
“Because we manufacture SuperLite® II-XL in our own California facility, we have direct visibility into the materials, energy and processes used to produce it,” adds O’Keeffe. “That level of control allowed us to provide meaningful, facility-specific information rather than relying solely on broad industry averages.”
Covering the Complete SuperLite® II-XL Product Family
The EPD represents the weighted average environmental results for four SuperLite® II-XL products:
- SuperLite® II-XL 45, 45 Minute Fire Resistive Glazing
- SuperLite® II-XL 60, 60 Minute Fire Resistive Glazing
- SuperLite® II-XL 90, 90 Minute Fire Resistive Glazing
- SuperLite® II-XL 120, 120 Minute Fire Resistive Glazing
The weighted average was calculated using SAFTI FIRST®’s 2024 production percentages for each fire rating configuration. The individual product results were reviewed against the average, and the most conservative result was used for impact categories that exceeded the established variance threshold.
“This broad coverage makes the EPD useful across a wide range of fire rated applications,” says Tim Nass, Vice President of Sales at SAFTI FIRST®. “Whether a project requires a 45 minute opening or a 2 hour fire resistive wall, architects and project teams can now reference verified environmental information for the SuperLite® II-XL product family.”
Combining Fire Safety, Clarity and Sustainability
SuperLite® II-XL is a tint-free and optically clear fire resistive glazing product designed to provide maximum fire and impact safety. It is tested and approved for use in full-vision temperature rise doors and fire resistive wall assemblies, while also providing hose stream and radiant heat protection.
The product can also be incorporated into custom architectural make-ups designed to provide additional protection against bullets, blast, forced entry, attack, hurricane impact and more.
SuperLite® II-XL is made with materials sourced in the United States and manufactured at SAFTI FIRST®’s facility in Merced, California, reinforcing the company’s commitment to domestic manufacturing, stringent quality control, competitive pricing and fast lead times.
“Today’s architects are being asked to meet increasingly complex fire, energy and sustainability requirements without sacrificing transparency or aesthetics,” says Nass. “SuperLite® II-XL gives them a single product platform that can address life safety, design flexibility and documented environmental performance.”
Identifying Opportunities for Continued Improvement
In addition to providing transparency for project teams, the EPD gives SAFTI FIRST® a detailed benchmark for evaluating future improvements to its materials and manufacturing processes.
The life cycle assessment found that raw material supply represents the largest contribution across the reported environmental impact categories, followed by manufacturing. Flat glass was identified as the largest raw-material contributor in most categories, while electricity consumption was the primary driver within the manufacturing stage.
“The EPD gives us more than a published document — it gives us a roadmap,” says O’Keeffe. “By identifying where the greatest impacts occur, we can continue exploring meaningful opportunities to improve our products and operations.”
The SuperLite® II-XL EPD is available through the Smart EPD® Library and at safti.com.
